Overview
In microtia, the auricle may be small or differently shaped; There may be no external ear structure in anotia. The condition of the external auditory canal and hearing are also evaluated. Auricle repair alone is not a procedure that eliminates hearing loss. Referral to an experienced center with ear, nose and throat, audiology, plastic surgery and prosthesis specialists is required. Options may include repair from the person's own rib cartilage, repair with a selected implant, and a prosthetic ear. Not wanting surgery is also a choice that should be evaluated. Timing is determined by growth, available tissue, and the child's wishes; More than one stage may be required.
What is evaluated?
- Hearing and the condition of the ear canal are evaluated by the audiology and ear, nose and throat team.
- Existing skin, ear remnants and previous surgeries are examined.
- The child's growth, preferences, and suitability for cartilage or prosthetic options are discussed.
Approach and options
- Monitoring and necessary hearing support can be continued without repairing the outer ear.
- Repair with the person's own rib cartilage or a suitable implant can be considered.
- The prosthetic ear option can be discussed along with its care requirements and attachment style.
Recovery and follow-up
It is important to protect the repair area from pressure and follow the dressing; details are given according to the chosen method. If rib cartilage is used, healing of the chest area is also monitored. Staged interventions or shape corrections may be required. Hearing aid and ear repair plans are carried out in harmony by the relevant teams.
