Overview

Excessive sweating is the production of more sweat than expected with heat or exercise. It may be limited to the armpit, palms and soles of the feet, or it may be widespread. Regional sweating that has been present for a long time and widespread sweating that has just started do not require the same evaluation; Some diseases and medications may cause it. If it is accompanied by night sweats or other symptoms, the underlying condition should be investigated. The goal of treatment is to reduce sweating to a level that less affects daily life. Deodorant targets odor, antiperspirant targets sweat. The effect of botulinum toxin is temporary; It is not the first or only option for everyone.

What is evaluated?

  • Time of onset, affected areas and night sweats are questioned.
  • Medications, accompanying symptoms and possible secondary causes are evaluated.
  • Assessment of the effects on work, social life and use of the hands.

Approach and options

  • Appropriate antiperspirant and other prescription topical options can be considered as a first step.
  • Iontophoresis for hand and foot sweating may be an option in suitable patients.
  • Botulinum toxin in regional sweating; In resistant cases, other treatments can be discussed with the specialist.

Recovery and follow-up

Recovery and care requirements depend on the treatment. Local tenderness or bruising may follow an injection, and hand weakness may occur after treatment of the hands. Response is assessed by the reduction in sweating during daily life. Irritation is monitored with topical products, and side effects are monitored with systemic medication. Repeat treatment is planned individually.

Risks and limits

  • Irritation or discoloration with topical products
  • Post-injection pain, bruising and temporary muscle weakness
  • Skin irritation or burn from iontophoresis
  • Dry mouth and other anticholinergic effects in systemic medications

The headings here do not cover all risks. Possible benefits, alternatives and personal risks should be discussed in detail during the examination.

You can ask in the consultation

  • Should another reason for my sweating be investigated?
  • Does using my hands intensively change the treatment choice?
  • What is the repeat or alternative treatment plan if the effect diminishes?
