Overview

Chemical peeling is a medical practice that affects certain layers of the skin in a controlled manner. The properties of the substance used and the depth of treatment determine the targeted change and the healing process. It can be evaluated for superficial roughness, some acne problems, fine lines and certain pigment irregularities. Deep sunken scars, significant sagging or advanced wrinkles may not be adequately corrected by peeling alone. It is not appropriate to take action without determining the cause of the stain; New blemishes may develop on some skin. Herpes history, scarring tendency and care products used are evaluated in advance. Sun protection after treatment is as important as the choice of procedure.

What is evaluated?

  • Assessment of the cause of the pigmentation, skin tone and any active acne or dermatitis.
  • Response to previous peelings and history of herpes and keloids are questioned.
  • Medications used, skin products and sun protection options are discussed.

Approach and options

  • Superficial peeling can be considered for more limited surface problems.
  • Medium depth peeling is compared to the need for more maintenance in selected patients.
  • Deep peeling is only considered with a comprehensive risk assessment in the appropriate patient.

Recovery and follow-up

Peeling, redness and tightness vary depending on treatment depth. The time to return to skin-irritating products and make-up is determined by the physician. It is important not to pull the peeling skin and to continue the recommended care. Sun protection should not be neglected; If unexpected pain, discharge or darkening develops, a check-up should be requested.
