Overview
Upper arm skin may become loose due to weight loss, aging and hereditary traits. Although strengthening the arm muscles is beneficial, it does not eliminate significant excess skin. Brachioplasty regulates the arm line by reducing excess tissue in the area that can extend from the armpit to the elbow. As the prevalence of sagging increases, the scar may need to be lengthened; An incision just under the armpit is not enough for everyone. If the problem is mainly fat accumulation and the skin is flexible, liposuction is also considered. The aim is not only to reduce the arm circumference; The transition of the arm to the body, the differences between right and left, and the person's movement requirements are also included in the planning.
What is evaluated?
- The extent of sagging skin to the armpit and side of the chest is evaluated.
- Fat thickness, skin elasticity and the difference between the two arms are examined.
- The visibility of the scar, the demands of using your arms at work and your healing capacity are discussed.
Approach and options
- For limited skin laxity, shorter incision approaches are evaluated for suitability.
- Extensive excess skin may require removal and lifting along the arm.
- If there is regional fat, liposuction may be considered alone or together with a lift.
Recovery and follow-up
There may be tension, swelling and bruising in arm movements. The use of dressing and, if necessary, support clothing is carried out according to the physician's plan. Heavy lifting and movements that strain the arms are started gradually. Return to work depends on the extent of the procedure and arm use; scar care is re-evaluated throughout follow-up.
Risks and limits
- Prominent or widening incision scar
- Seroma, infection and wound dehiscence
- Numbness or nerve damage
- Asymmetry and recurrent skin laxity
The headings here do not cover all risks. Possible benefits, alternatives and personal risks should be discussed in detail during the examination.
You can ask in the consultation
- Which side of my arm will the scar be and how long will it be?
- Would liposuction alone be enough to address my skin sagging?
- When can I return to lifting movements at work?
