Overview

In people who lose a large amount of weight through diet, medication, or obesity surgery, the skin may not fully adapt to the new body volume. Folds on the abdomen, breasts, arms and thighs can make clothing selection, movement or skin care difficult. Post-weight loss surgery prioritizes problem areas; Not every area needs to be corrected in the same surgery. It is important that weight is balanced and nutrition supports healing. If there is a history of obesity surgery, preparations can be made together with the relevant teams. The goal is to reduce the functional and aesthetic complaints identified by the person; It is not about restoring the old skin quality or a completely scarless appearance.

What is evaluated?

  • Whether the weight loss continues and future weight goals are discussed.
  • Nutritional adequacy, comorbidities and previous bariatric surgery are evaluated.
  • Skin folds that cause irritation, hygiene difficulties and mobility problems are identified.

Approach and options

  • For excess abdominal skin, panniculectomy or appropriate tummy tuck approach may be considered.
  • Arm, thigh, breast and torso corrections are planned separately according to need.
  • If nutrition or weight balance is not appropriate, preparation and monitoring can be done first.

Recovery and follow-up

Recovery varies depending on the number of areas treated and the general condition of the person. Nutrition monitoring, wound care and compliance with regular check-ups are particularly important. For the next stage, the recovery from the first surgery is evaluated. Daily life support and the need for breaks from physical work should be planned in advance.

Risks and limits

  • Delayed wound healing and wound dehiscence
  • Seroma, infection, or bleeding
  • Extensive scarring and recurrent skin laxity
  • Clot formation and the need for additional surgery

The headings here do not cover all risks. Possible benefits, alternatives and personal risks should be discussed in detail during the examination.

You can ask in the consultation

  • Do my weight and nutritional status suggest that I am ready for surgery?
  • Which area should be treated first to make my daily life easier?
  • How many stages are expected, and how will decisions about the next stage be made?
