Overview
If the tip of the chin appears backward, forward or asymmetrical, it may affect the facial profile and the perceived balance with the nose. In the evaluation, the tip of the jaw, the general position of the lower jaw and the closing of the teeth are distinguished. Adding volume with an implant, moving a part of the jawbone, or reducing its prominence are different options. Each approach varies in incision location, impact on tissue, and scar requirement. If there is a problem with the closing of the teeth, only the tip of the jaw may not be sufficient. The plan considers the front view and profile together; Evaluation of facial proportions does not necessarily mean that further procedures will be performed.
What is evaluated?
- Assessment of chin position from the front and side, symmetry and facial proportions.
- Assessment of the bite, overall lower jaw position and, if needed, evaluation by a jaw surgeon.
- Assessment of oral health, previous implants or operations, and chin sensation.
Approach and options
- Chin implant suitability can be evaluated for volume and forward prominence.
- The position of the chin tip can be changed by genioplasty performed on the bone.
- Bone reduction may be discussed for an overly prominent chin; if there is a bite problem, other jaw procedures may be considered.
Recovery and follow-up
There may be swelling, tenderness, or numbness in the chin and lower lip. If an intraoral incision is used, oral cleaning and nutrition recommendations become important. Protection from pressure on the jaw, use of dressings and physical activity limits are determined according to the chosen method. Implant or bone healing is also evaluated during follow-up visits.
Risks and limits
- Change in sensation in the lower lip or chin, which may be permanent.
- Implant displacement or formation of a hard capsule around it.
- Bleeding, infection and wound healing problem.
- Asymmetry, contour irregularity or need for re-surgery.
